Solar PV can save you money on your electric bill
Many area residents have wanted to go solar, but it’s hard for the average homeowner to figure out just exactly how to do it. In addition to confusing technical and regulatory issues, the steep up-front cost of these solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generating systems has also been a problem for many people. Now, the Acorn Renewable Energy Co-op makes it easy and affordable for you to go solar!
We offer an economical way for you to own a solar PV system on your home with no money down, while the savings on your electric bill covers the financing. AEC has teamed up with Green Earth Energy of Brandon and the National Bank of Middlebury (NBM) to design, install, and finance a system that meets your family’s needs.
With a home equity loan from the NBM your system can be paid off in 15 years or less. And your custom-designed system will be installed by a local company that will stand behind its work and assist you if you should ever need repairs. You’ll also have the added satisfaction of knowing that your energy dollars will be circulating in the local economy!
The electricity generated by your new solar PV system will be fed into the electric grid when your home does not need it, causing your electric meter to spin backwards and generating a credit on your electric bill equal to your regular energy billing rate plus a premium of $0.06 per kWh. At night, or on cloudy days when the sun isn’t shining, your home will draw electricity back from the grid reducing the credit generated by your PV system. The idea is to generate as much electricity as your home uses over a year’s time to reduce the amount you pay your utility for electricity as close to zero as possible. This is known as Net Metering, and Vermont law requires utilities to make this option available to everyone.
Acorn Energy Co-op makes it easy for you. All we need is some basic information about your home’s location, its roof, and your utility. Then, we will check your home's solar orientation via satellite imaging. If your home has the right orientation we’ll set up a meeting with one of our solar representatives who will help get you started.
(If you decide that you wish to move forward with an installation, you need to be an Acorn Energy Co-op member to take advantage of this program.) Join Today!
As always, we recommend that you get an energy audit for your home to identify ways to make your home more energy efficient before you undertake any major renewable energy project.
